The latest jailbreaking tool for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, Spirit, is now available for free download. The Spirit jailbreak is untethered, which means that once the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch is hacked and jailbroken using the one-click software, the device can be restart or reboot anytime, anywhere at will, just like a normal unhacked device. Previously with other jail-breaking utilities, the portable device has to be connect (tether) to the computer to finish the boot process.
The Spirit jailbreak tool is based on userland jailbreak by comex which uses bug or exploit that exist in iPhone OS’s MobileSafari, Spirit allows mobile devices that are powered by iPhone OS, such as iPod touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, iPad and iPad 3G to be hacked or jailbroken to gain access to the file system (which otherwise has been lockdown) and allow unauthorized third-party apps which does not available or not approved to be distributed via the official App Store to be installed. During the jailbreaking process, Cydia is installed, where users can have access to the unofficial apps that available only after jailbroken.
The advantage of Spirit userland jailbreak is that it’s very simple to use (it’s a one-click application), and doesn’t require any app to be downloaded and installed on iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to jailbreak. Similar to blackra1n, Spirit can jailbreak almost all iDevices running iPhone OS 3.1.2, iPhone OS 3.1.3 or iPhone OS 3.2, including MC/non-MC, new bootrom/old bootrom on iPhone 2G/3G/3GS, iPod touch 1G/2G/3G and iPad/iPad 3G.
Spirit is a jailbreak only, and is not a carrier unlock. In other word, Spirit cannot be used to unlock iPhone. Good news is that iPad 3G does not have carrier lock in place but phone service is not support, but it has since been hacked to accept a microSIM from T-Mobile SIM card to natively send SMS text messaging.
For Apple device users who are currently using a tethered jailbreak, it will have to restore to original image to use Spirit. For iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS which has been unlocked, firmware upgrade is not recommended, unless owner who has SHSH blobs for iPhone OS 3.1.2 decides to restore to iPhone OS 3.1.2. Unlock for iPhone 3.1.3 on 05.12.01 baseband will not be available at least until the next version of iPhone (iPhone 4G) release to market.
Requirements to use Spirit:
- Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2 (not 3.2.1).
- An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
- Any version of iTunes 9 (including iTunes 9.1.1 or earlier than iTunes 9.2).
- Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended.

Spirit has also been ported to Linux, and available for download at github.com.
Spirit may still contain bugs. In fact, iPhone Dev Team developer has just updated the jailbreak tool to fix error where Spirit deletes photos on devices, and resolve the issue with error code c0000005 in Windows. If the problem still occur, a suggestion is to set the compatibility mode to Windows 95 or Windows 98. In addition, some apps or packages on Cydia third-party application repository which are not designed for iPad may crash or brick the iPad, requiring user to full restore iPad to original Apple firmware or backup.
Before attempting to jailbreak with Spirit, it’s recommended to save the SHSH blob files, so that in case Apple patches the exploit used by Spirit, there is a backup to fallback too.
